Calls for justice for Antony Ochieng have intensified after his death following an encounter with officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters and Kasarani Police Station on September 21 and 22, 2026.
Ochieng, who was from Kasarani in Nairobi, was shown being apprehended in a video that circulated widely on social media, before police later reported that he died after a vehicle he was travelling in crashed while fleeing from officers.
The conflicting accounts have raised questions from his family, friends and members of the public, who want a clear explanation of what happened to Ochieng from the time he was apprehended to the time of his death.
Calls for answers
Police said officers had intercepted a Mazda CX-5 in Githurai’s Sonic area after its occupants were allegedly seen offloading stolen electronics at a second-hand shop.
According to the police account, the occupants sped off, Ochieng lost control of the vehicle, struck an electricity pole and plunged into a ditch.
He was taken to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Two other occupants reportedly escaped, while televisions, laptops and mobile phones were recovered.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud denied claims that Ochieng was assaulted and said a postmortem would establish the cause of death.
For those demanding justice for Ochieng, the key question remains what happened between the reported apprehension and his death.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino called for investigations into the officers involved, saying: “Police officers from DCI Headquarters and Kasarani Police Station arrested and killed Antony Ochieng. They then lied that Antony died in a road accident. We demand that the officers responsible be arrested and charged with an immediate effect. Kenyans deserve justice, accountability, and the protection of their lives.”
Politician Alinur Mohamed also questioned the circumstances surrounding Ochieng’s death, saying officers from DCI Headquarters and Kasarani Police Station apprehended him before he was later found dead.
The incident has also prompted calls for the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to establish what happened.
The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances of the apprehension, the vehicle crash, the officers involved, the widely circulated video and the postmortem findings.
For Ochieng’s family and those demanding accountability, the immediate focus remains establishing the full circumstances of his death and ensuring that any person found responsible faces due process.
