A man posing as a police officer to allegedly extort members of the public has been apprehended along Jogoo Road in Nairobi after his activities attracted the attention of law enforcement officers.

The person of interest, identified as Augustine Mjomba Mwadime, was apprehended at DC Stage by officers from Jogoo Road Police Station following a tip-off from members of the public, the National Police Service (NPS) said on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

According to the NPS, the man had been impersonating a law enforcement officer while allegedly extorting unsuspecting members of the public.

When confronted by officers, Mwadime introduced himself as Sergeant Augustine Mjomba Mwadime, claiming to be attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) Training School in Embakasi.

However, his claims raised questions about his identity, prompting officers to conduct a search that exposed what police described as an elaborate impersonation scheme.

Fake police documents and handcuffs recovered

The search reportedly led to the recovery of a forged certificate of appointment bearing a fake service number.

Officers also recovered a pair of handcuffs and two keys, which the NPS said were among the items intended to make his false police identity appear legitimate.

The recovery mirrors other reported cases involving individuals using fake police credentials to deceive members of the public.

In August 2026, detectives apprehended a person of interest in Nairobi and recovered fake police papers, handcuffs and a firearm during an operation at a casino in Kilimani.

In another incident in April 2026, detectives apprehended three persons of interest linked to robberies involving individuals impersonating police officers.

Person of interest held pending arraignment

Following his apprehension, Mwadime was taken into custody, where he is undergoing processing pending arraignment in court.

The NPS did not disclose how long the alleged extortion scheme had been operating, the amount of money involved or the number of people who may have fallen victim to the scheme.

The latest incident highlights the potential risks posed by individuals impersonating law enforcement officers to exploit the public’s trust in security agencies.

Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activities to the relevant authorities through established police reporting channels.
