Five people were apprehended after police recovered eight mobile phones believed to have been stolen from members of the public during ODM’s political rally at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi.
The individuals were apprehended on Saturday evening, October 31, 2026, following an operation by police officers from Starehe Sub-County, who moved in after reports of theft during the gathering.
Police said the individuals had taken advantage of the large crowd at the political rally to steal from unsuspecting attendees.
Eight mobile phones recovered
According to the National Police Service, officers conducted searches on the five individuals and recovered eight mobile phones believed to have been stolen during the rally.
The recovered phones were secured as exhibits as the five people remained in police custody awaiting arraignment in court.
The operation comes amid concerns over criminal activities during political gatherings, where large crowds can create opportunities for thieves to target members of the public.
The National Police Service warned criminal gangs against using political rallies as an opportunity to commit crimes.
“Political rallies must never be used as a platform for criminal gangs to target, harass or steal from members of the public,” the police stated.
Police issue warning to criminal gangs
The police said they were committed to maintaining law and order during public gatherings and would continue taking action against individuals involved in criminal activities.
They also urged members of the public attending political rallies to remain alert and take care of their personal belongings.
“Members of the public are strongly urged to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious individuals or activities to the nearest police post or station,” the National Police Service added.
The public can also report incidents through the police toll-free numbers.
The police operation followed a chaotic rally at Jacaranda Grounds, where criminal activities were reported as political supporters gathered for the ODM event.
