Political activist and vocal government opposer Nuru Okang’a has come out strongly in defense of Nairobi gubernatorial hopeful Agnes Kagure amid rising cases of what he termed as ethnic profiling targeting leaders from the Mt Kenya region.

Speaking during a charged Bunge La Wananchi session at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi, Okang’a criticized a section of political players whom he accused of constantly attacking leaders from the Kikuyu community instead of focusing on leadership qualities and development records.

According to Okang’a, Agnes Kagure has consistently demonstrated compassion, generosity and presence during times of crisis, making attacks against her unfair and misplaced.

“Na Mr Speaker, kuna watu wako hapa lakini kazi yao ni ku attack viongozi wa Mt Kenya. Ni aibu kubwa sana. Unatusi mtu kama Kagure, alilipia msee rent ya mwaka mzima. Kila time tukiwa na msiba yeye anakuja. Kwa nini umdharau?” said Nuru Okang’a.

The outspoken activist further argued that leadership should be judged through actions and service delivery rather than tribal affiliation, insisting that Kagure has already proven herself through her consistent involvement in helping ordinary Nairobi residents.

His remarks come at a time when political temperatures in the capital are gradually rising ahead of the 2027 General Election, with several aspirants already positioning themselves for the Nairobi governor race.

Agnes Kagure, a city businesswoman and philanthropist, has continued to gain traction across Nairobi due to her grassroots engagements, charity work and visibility during difficult moments affecting residents. Her supporters argue that her accessibility and willingness to assist vulnerable families have made her one of the most relatable figures in the city’s political landscape.

Okang’a’s sentiments have since sparked debate online, with some Kenyans praising him for condemning tribal politics while others called for issue-based campaigns ahead of the upcoming elections.
