Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi has been recognized as Africa’s Cargo Airport of the Year at the STAT Times International Awards for Excellence in Air Cargo, an esteemed event that honors outstanding contributions in the global air freight industry.

The award was presented during a gala ceremony at Serena Hotel, Nairobi, on Thursday, February 20, as part of the Air Cargo Africa & Transport Logistics Africa 2025 conference.

JKIA’s General Manager, Dr. Rose Koros, received the award alongside Jacob Bwana, Cargo Manager, and Debra Ondaba, Product and Brand Manager.

Expressing appreciation for the recognition, Dr. Koros reaffirmed the airport’s dedication to improving efficiency and innovation in cargo handling.

“This award underscores JKIA’s vital role in facilitating trade across Africa and beyond. Our focus remains on operational excellence and enhancing cargo-handling capabilities to support regional and global commerce,” she stated.

JKIA’s latest achievement highlights its status as one of the continent’s most efficient air cargo hubs. In 2024, the airport processed 112,000 tons of cargo in the first quarter alone, reinforcing its significance in export and import trade across Africa.

The airport plays a crucial role in transporting high-value goods, including fresh produce, pharmaceuticals, and specialized products, which make up 80 percent of Africa’s total air cargo exports.

The award comes at a time when Africa’s air cargo sector is witnessing rapid growth, driven by initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This agreement has already increased intra-African trade by 25 percent and transport demand by 50 percent, further solidifying JKIA’s position as a key logistics hub.

With strategic location, modern infrastructure, and a focus on innovation, JKIA continues to be a leading air cargo gateway, contributing significantly to Africa’s economic expansion.

The STAT Times International Awards for Excellence in Air Cargo are among the most prestigious honors in the industry, recognizing exceptional leadership, operational efficiency, and advancements in air freight.

Each year, the event brings together key industry players to celebrate organizations and individuals making a significant impact in global cargo logistics.

Meanwhile, the latest Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) report shows that passenger traffic at JKIA increased by 1.9 percent in 2024, with 1,507,836 visitors processed compared to 1,478,396 in 2023—a rise of 29,440 passengers.

JKIA remains a key entry point into Kenya, alongside Moi International Airport (Mombasa) and Kisumu International Airport, playing a pivotal role in both passenger and cargo transport.
