EABL reputation holds firm as viral claims dismissed as baseless misinformation online attacks

Amid viral claims, East African Breweries Limited stands firm, with its strong governance, clean record and trusted leadership praised as analysts dismiss the allegations as baseless misinformation.

It is said that when you want to kill a dog, you give it a bad name, and to Nadida Rowlands, Legal Director at East African Breweries Limited (EABL), that saying now feels like a lived reality.

For the better part of Wednesday, his name trended online, pulled into a storm of allegations that, upon closer scrutiny, lack proof and credible grounding.

Posts circulating on X under hashtags such as #EABLdataLeak and #ArrestNadidaRowlands painted a picture of internal surveillance, privacy breaches, and personal misconduct.

Funny thing is that all the posters trending online and purporting to belong to various media houses are fake, and even the accounts trending them are using parody accounts that do not have an online base.

However, checks across official channels show no evidence to support these claims. No complaints have been filed with regulators, no investigations have been announced, and none of the institutions cited in the posts has confirmed the allegations.

The claims even referenced supposed reports by Citizen Digital and remarks attributed to lawyer Danstan Omari and Law Society of Kenya President Charles Kanjama.

Yet, there is no trace of such reports or statements in the public domain. Industry observers say this pattern reflects a familiar tactic where anonymous accounts attach big names to unverified claims to give them the appearance of credibility.

EABL has firmly denied any suggestion of a data breach, stating that its systems remain secure and compliant with Kenya’s data protection laws.

As part of the Diageo group, the company operates under strict governance and regulatory frameworks across its East African markets.

Within professional circles, Rowlands is described as a steady and accomplished legal mind, known for strengthening compliance structures and guiding corporate policy.

Colleagues say his track record speaks for itself, and that attempts to link his to unproven claims are both unfair and misleading.

“Reputation is built over years, but it can be targeted in minutes online,” one corporate governance expert noted, adding that the absence of formal complaints or evidence should guide public judgment.

The timing of the online campaign has also drawn attention. It coincides with EABL’s release of strong half-year financial results, with growth in sales and a notable rise in profitability.

Analysts suggest that such moments often attract noise intended to distract from positive corporate performance.

Despite the online chatter, EABL continues to emphasise its role as a key contributor to the region’s economy, supporting jobs, local farmers, and government revenue streams. Its portfolio, including brands such as Tusker, Guinness, and Smirnoff, remains firmly embedded in the market.

As the story unfolds, stakeholders are being urged to separate verified facts from viral claims. For Rowlands and EABL, the focus remains on maintaining trust, upholding integrity, and continuing with business as usual despite the noise online.
