Impeachment petition hits Sakaja over goons, illegal evictions and broken public trust

Governor Sakaja is under pressure as a Nairobi resident pushes for his impeachment, accusing him of illegal evictions, rent fraud, abuse of office, and using goons to silence dissent.

A Nairobi resident has taken a bold step by submitting a petition to the Nairobi County Assembly, asking for the impeachment of Governor Johnson Sakaja. This move has put Sakaja in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

The petitioner has accused Sakaja of grossly violating the Constitution and national laws, abusing his office, and disrespecting the rights of the people who live in Nairobi. These are serious allegations that point to a governor who has abandoned his duty to serve and protect his people.

The accusations don’t stop there. The petitioner claims that Sakaja illegally sent county officers to evict tenants from houses managed by the county.

These evictions were not only done without proper procedure but were also accompanied by violence and force. In addition, the petitioner alleges that there was fraud in the way rent arrears were reported.

Property owners are said to have been given false information about what they owed, a trick that could have led to illegal actions like evictions or property seizures.

The resident wants the County Assembly to take this petition seriously and to begin the impeachment process under Standing Order 68.

According to him, this is not just about removing Sakaja it is about bringing back accountability to the county government. He is calling on the assembly to form a committee to investigate the claims. If the committee finds strong evidence, then the next step would be to table an official motion to remove Sakaja from office.

The petitioner says he has hard evidence to support his claims. He mentions affidavits from victims of the forced evictions, videos and pictures of the goons allegedly sent by Sakaja, and even documents showing the false rent arrears. These materials, he says, will be handed over to the investigators to help build the case.

In the petition, the residents write that Sakaja’s behaviour is a betrayal of their trust. They call on the Members of the County Assembly to stay true to their oath and defend the Constitution by removing the governor.

This comes just days after Sakaja was accused of being behind a group of goons who disrupted protests in the city on Tuesday, June 17. The protests were peaceful until these groups showed up and started causing chaos.

Although Sakaja has denied any connection, saying he has never sent goons to sabotage any protests, many are finding it hard to believe him given his record. He even claimed to have spoken with the police to ensure protestors are protected during upcoming demonstrations.

But that statement from Sakaja seems too little too late. His leadership has been marked by controversy, arrogance, and broken promises.

Nairobi residents are tired of being ignored, harassed, and mistreated by a county government that was supposed to serve them. The petition to impeach Sakaja is not just about a few bad decisions. It is a reflection of the growing anger and frustration among Nairobians who feel they have been abandoned by their governor. If these allegations are proven, then Sakaja has no business staying in office one more day.
