Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is facing renewed scrutiny after the family of late blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang claimed several high-profile promises made after his death have not been fulfilled.

Speaking in an emotional interview on Monday, May 04, 2026, Albert Ojwang’s father, Meshack Opiyo Ojwang, revealed that financial donations received following his son’s death have been exhausted, leaving the family struggling to survive through small-scale farming.

Meshack said despite public pledges of support from leaders, little has materialised months later.

“I was given Ksh10 million and it is finished. There is not even a single shilling remaining. Right now, I depend on farming just to survive,” he said.

The grieving father also claimed some leaders made promises during the height of national outrage over his son’s death but have since gone silent.

Among those mentioned was Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who in June 2025 publicly pledged comprehensive support to the family after meeting them at City Hall.

At the time, Sakaja promised to educate Albert Ojwang’s young son, secure employment for his widow after graduation, help her access one of Nairobi’s affordable housing units, and mobilise resources to buy a plot for Albert’s parents in Homa Bay where rental houses could be built to generate long-term income.

However, according to Meshack, several of those commitments are yet to be realised.

“Some people promised many things, but until now nothing has happened. We are still waiting,” he said.

Albert Ojwang died under controversial circumstances while in custody at Central Police Station in Nairobi in June 2025, sparking nationwide protests and demands for justice.

An autopsy later contradicted initial police claims, with pathologists concluding he had suffered severe injuries inconsistent with self-harm.

His death triggered public anger, with politicians and activists rallying behind the family and pledging both justice and material support.

Now, nearly a year later, the family says the spotlight has faded while their daily struggles continue.

The latest revelations are likely to fuel criticism of Kenyan politicians accused of making emotional public promises during moments of tragedy, only for affected families to later report abandonment.

Governor Sakaja has not publicly responded to the fresh claims at the time of publication.
