Safaricom has launched a referral program offering Ksh500 to customers who successfully refer new users to its Safaricom Fibre service. The move comes as the telecommunications giant faces growing competition from Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, Starlink.

Customers can generate a referral code by dialing 400*8# and will receive Ksh500 once the referred person activates their Safaricom Fibre connection.

“Earn Ksh500 by referring a friend to get connected to Safaricom Fibre! Dial 400*8# today to get a referral link & get paid once the connection is active!” reads a message from Safaricom.

Safaricom Home Fibre provides fast, reliable, and unlimited internet access for households. Customers receive a Wi-Fi router upon registration, enabling both wireless and LAN connections.

Additionally, Safaricom offers Home Fibre Plus, a package that combines mobile voice, mobile data, SMS, and Home Fibre under one plan. To activate Home Fibre Plus, customers can dial *400*8#, select “Manage Your Subscription”, and then choose the “Home Fibre Plus” option.

The service is available in major towns, including Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Thika, Bungoma, Kitale, Nyeri, and Nanyuki.

In Nairobi, Safaricom Fibre is accessible in estates such as Nyayo Estate, Imara Daima, South B, Lang’ata, Ongata Rongai, Kiambu Road, Ruaka, Runda, Parklands, Westlands, Kileleshwa, Mountain View, Kinoo, and Kikuyu, among others.

Starlink’s Market Expansion in Kenya

Meanwhile, Starlink has been expanding its footprint in Kenya. According to a report by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), Starlink’s market share more than doubled within three months, rising from 0.5% in June 2024 to 1.1% by September 2024.

During this period, Starlink gained 8,723 new subscribers, surpassing the 8,063 users it added in the full year leading up to June—marking an impressive 101.64% growth to 16,786 subscribers.

As competition intensifies, Safaricom’s latest referral incentive aims to solidify its position in the home internet market while fending off Starlink’s growing influence.

Starlink is an LEO satellite internet constellation operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
