There is a saying that argues that when an elderly man tells you something, then it is better to believe it because you do not have an alternative.

Political Ringside has of late become one of the most respected sources of political insight in Kenya, consistently bringing forward voices that speak directly from experience, power corridors and grassroots realities.

In its latest interview hosted by Kevin Waswa, the platform features Ken Onyango, the National Chairman of boda boda riders and Deputy Party Leader of the Kenya Patriots Party.

His remarks present a structured defence of why President William Ruto deserves a second term, rooted in development, economic shifts and political inclusion.

Infrastructure and economic reforms take centre stage

Onyango places heavy emphasis on infrastructure as a defining marker of the current administration. He confirms ongoing works on the Rironi Mau Summit road, noting contractor activity in Gilgil and Mau Summit.

According to him, this project is expected to significantly cut travel time to Western Kenya and Nyanza, unlocking trade and mobility.

He further supports the proposed Thika Road expressway, framing it as part of a long term vision aligned with global standards seen in countries such as Singapore and China. In his assessment, such projects are practical investments rather than symbolic undertakings.

On agriculture, Onyango highlights reduced fertiliser prices now at KSh 2,500 from previous highs of KSh 7,000. He also points to improved maize purchase rates above KSh 3,500 per bag.

These changes, he argues, have directly improved farmer livelihoods in regions like Kitale and strengthened food production.

Taxation debate and the cost of development

The interview does not ignore the current tax burden. Onyango acknowledges that many Kenyans are feeling economic pressure through increased deductions and levies. However, he frames taxation as a necessary component of development.

He argues that revenue collected is being channelled into visible projects such as affordable housing and stadium construction, including Talanta Stadium.

His position suggests that short term financial strain should be weighed against long term national growth and infrastructure expansion.

Youth engagement and shifting expectations

Onyango delivers a direct message to young people, particularly Gen Z. He criticises excessive time spent on social media platforms and calls for a shift towards productivity and self employment.

He attributes some of the challenges to the 8 4 4 education system, which he says created expectations around white collar employment. He encourages youth to embrace blue collar opportunities and entrepreneurial paths.

He also references government youth grants, stating that while financial support has been provided, some beneficiaries misuse funds on non productive activities instead of investing in businesses.

Political weight of the boda boda sector

With an estimated 2.7 million riders across the country, the boda boda sector remains a critical political force.

Onyango signals that this group is increasingly aware of its influence and is prepared to use its numbers in the 2027 election.

He dismisses calls for a one term presidency as a mirage, arguing that constitutional timelines and ongoing projects justify continuity.

He also notes increased engagement between boda boda leadership and the executive, including multiple invitations to State House, indicating growing inclusion in national discussions.

All the same, what is your take?
