The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the apprehension of a 39-year-old man following the recovery of 20 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa from a public service vehicle in Bumula, Busia County.

In a statement on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, the DCI said police officers from Bumala Police Station acted on a tip-off and intercepted a PSV, registration number KCP 022H, along the Busia–Kisumu Road.

Drugs recovered

According to the DCI, officers searched the vehicle’s boot and recovered a green sack and a black bag containing cannabis sativa weighing a total of 20 kilogrammes.

Detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) in Busia later took over investigations into the consignment.

The DCI said preliminary investigations established that the narcotics were not ordinary passenger luggage and linked the vehicle’s driver, Stephen Otieno Jumbo alias Barry, 39, to the consignment.

He was subsequently apprehended and taken into police custody for processing ahead of arraignment.

The recovered narcotics were retained as exhibits as detectives continued with investigations into the trafficking operation.

Conductor sought

The DCI further said investigators established that the driver was working together with the vehicle’s conductor, identified as Patrick Omondi.

According to investigators, Omondi fled the scene during the police operation.

Detectives have intensified efforts to trace and apprehend him as investigations into the source and intended destination of the recovered narcotics continue.

The operation comes as officers attached to anti-narcotics units continue targeting the movement and distribution of illegal drugs through public transport routes.

The DCI said the apprehended driver remains in custody pending arraignment, while the 20 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa remain secured as exhibits in the case.
