President William Ruto has revealed that his decision to appoint the late General Francis Ogolla as Chief of the Defence Forces was met with intense resistance including warnings that the move could threaten his hold on power.
Speaking during a public engagement the President recounted how several individuals questioned his judgment after he selected Ogolla to head the Kenya Defence Forces with some even suggesting that the military appointment could lead to his overthrow.
When I appointed the late General Ogolla as CDF many people came and told me, you are going to be overthrown Ruto said recalling the concerns that followed the announcement.
Despite the fears and criticism the President said he remained convinced that Ogolla was the right person for the position.
He emphasized that leadership appointments should be guided by competence, integrity and dedication to public service rather than political calculations or personal interests.
Ruto described the late military chief as a disciplined and patriotic officer whose loyalty was to the Constitution and the people of Kenya.
According to the President, Ogolla’s performance in office vindicated the decision and demonstrated the importance of trusting professional institutions.
The appointment of Ogolla in 2023 sparked widespread debate with some political figures questioning his suitability for the role.
The controversy stemmed largely from allegations surrounding the 2022 General Election claims that fueled opposition to his elevation within the military ranks.
However Ruto said he chose to look beyond political narratives and instead focused on the officer’s record of service.
He noted that strong institutions can only thrive when leaders make decisions based on merit rather than pressure from competing interests.
The President used the occasion to underscore the professionalism of the Kenya Defence Forces saying the military remains committed to its constitutional mandate of safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and security.
Ruto’s remarks also served as a tribute to General Ogolla who died in a military helicopter crash in April 2024 alongside several other officers.
The tragedy sent shockwaves across the nation and prompted an outpouring of grief from leaders and citizens alike.
Remembering the fallen general, Ruto praised his dedication to duty and his contribution to strengthening Kenya’s security apparatus.
He said Ogolla’s legacy continues to stand as a reminder that service to the nation should always take precedence over politics.
The President maintained that history had proven the critics wrong and that his confidence in General Ogolla was never misplaced.
