Constitutional lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has accused the National Intelligence Service (NIS) of being behind online campaigns that he claims are designed to influence the opposition’s process of selecting a presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
In a statement shared on his official X account on July 21, 2026, Njiru alleged that state-sponsored online platforms were spreading narratives intended to create divisions within the opposition coalition at a time when discussions about its future leadership are gaining momentum.
Njiru claimed that several online accounts and platforms were actively promoting what he described as misleading information regarding the opposition’s presidential succession plans. According to him, these efforts are aimed at shaping public perception and creating confusion among supporters of the coalition.
He urged Kenyans to remain cautious and not be influenced by what he termed as propaganda being circulated through social media and other digital platforms.
The lawyer further argued that intelligence resources should be directed toward addressing security concerns rather than engaging in political debates online.
He alleged that significant public resources were being used to push divisive narratives instead of focusing on matters that directly affect the safety and welfare of citizens. However, Njiru did not provide evidence to support his claims against the intelligence agency.
Despite his concerns, Njiru maintained that the opposition remains united and committed to its plans ahead of the next general election. He said ongoing discussions about leadership would not derail the coalition’s broader objective of presenting a strong alternative to the current administration.
According to him, efforts to create divisions among opposition leaders would ultimately fail because the coalition is focused on building a common political agenda.
Njiru also revealed that the opposition has already assembled a team of experts tasked with developing an inclusive framework for identifying its presidential flagbearer.
He said the team is working on a process that will take into account the views of supporters and stakeholders across the country. Once the framework is completed, he noted, details will be communicated to supporters of the coalition.
His remarks come at a time when public interest in the opposition’s succession plans continues to grow. The question of who will lead the opposition into the 2027 presidential race has become one of the most discussed topics in Kenya’s political landscape. Several senior political figures have been mentioned as possible contenders, with supporters of different leaders already pushing their preferred candidates.
The debate intensified further after Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka recently distanced the opposition from a digital platform launched by a group calling itself the WANTAM Advisory Committee.
The platform had claimed it would provide Kenyans with an opportunity to participate in identifying the coalition’s preferred presidential candidate.
In a statement issued on July 17, 2026, Kalonzo clarified that neither the platform nor the lobby group behind it had been approved by the Wiper Patriotic Front, the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition, or the United Alternative Government in Waiting.
While distancing the coalition from the initiative, he welcomed public interest in the succession process and emphasized the importance of transparency, inclusivity and adherence to constitutional principles.
Kalonzo further assured supporters that the opposition would announce its official mechanism for selecting a presidential candidate through recognized party structures at the appropriate time.
His statement was seen as an attempt to bring clarity to growing speculation surrounding the coalition’s plans.
As political activity gradually shifts toward the 2027 General Election, attention remains firmly fixed on the opposition and how it will settle on a single candidate.
Names such as Kalonzo Musyoka, Rigathi Gachagua, Fred Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa and Martha Karua continue to feature prominently in public discussions.
Although opposition leaders have repeatedly pledged to unite behind one candidate, the criteria and timeline for making that decision have yet to be made public, ensuring that the succession debate remains a major topic in Kenyan politics.
