Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has mourned former Kenyan politician Cyrus Jirongo, saying he only recently learnt that the former senator had died in a road accident last December.
Museveni described Jirongo as a “good and patriotic leader” who served Kenya with dedication, saying his death was a loss to his family, friends and the country.
“I have just learnt that Senator Cyrus Jirongo passed away last December in a motor accident. I was not aware that he had died. This is very sad,” Museveni wrote on X.

The Ugandan leader said Jirongo’s contribution to Kenya would be remembered, extending his condolences to those who knew him.
“Jirongo was a good and patriotic leader who served his country with dedication. We shall miss him,” Museveni said.
He added: “My condolences go to his family, relatives, friends and the people of Kenya. May his soul rest in peace.”
Jirongo, a former Lugari MP and senator, was a prominent figure in Kenyan politics and was known for his outspoken views on national political and economic affairs.
His death last December came after he was involved in a road accident, with news of his death drawing reactions from across Kenya’s political landscape.
Jirongo and fuel politics
Jirongo had also made public claims and raised concerns over alleged fuel cartels and corruption in Kenya’s petroleum sector, including matters surrounding the movement and pricing of fuel.
His political career spanned several decades, during which he served in Parliament and remained involved in national political debates.
Museveni’s tribute comes months after Jirongo’s death, with the Ugandan president saying he had only recently learnt of the former Kenyan lawmaker’s passing.
