Millie Odhiambo has responded firmly after news emerged that a man she publicly exposed over gender-based violence claims reportedly lost his job. The lawmaker made it clear that she has no regrets about speaking out and insisted that condemning gender-based violence remains more important to her than online criticism.
The man at the center of the controversy is James Opande, a Kenyan medical practitioner working in the United States. Opande became widely known after a video circulated online showing him in a compromising situation with Marion Naipei. In the clip, he allegedly exposed Naipei’s private parts without her consent. The footage quickly spread across social media platforms and sparked strong reactions from many Kenyans, with a large number condemning the act as a serious violation of privacy.
Following the incident, Odhiambo shared posts criticizing the alleged behavior and highlighting the issue as a form of gender-based violence. After reports surfaced that Opande had lost his job in the United States, some social media users questioned whether the Suba North Member of Parliament had taken the step of reporting him to his employer.
The legislator responded by clarifying that she had not contacted Opande’s workplace. According to her, her role was simply to expose what she believed was wrongdoing and to raise awareness about gender-based violence. She maintained that any action taken by his employer was not her responsibility.

“If his employer follows me and fires him based on my post, he is free to sue the employer and me. I will continue unapologetically condemning any forms of Gender-Based Violence,” she stated.
Odhiambo also addressed the criticism directed at her on social media. Some people accused her of going too far or contributing to the man losing his livelihood. However, the outspoken MP dismissed the backlash and emphasized that her focus is not on pleasing online audiences.
“You should have known by now that I seek no likes. I already like myself enough. Use me to gain traction if you want. Hate me if you want. Abuse me if you want. Am I a person you think you can run out of town with silly comments and posts on social media?” she posed.
The viral video triggered widespread debate across the country about privacy, respect, and the responsibilities people have when sharing content involving others.
Many Kenyans criticized Opande for exposing the private moment, arguing that such behavior contributes to the broader problem of gender-based violence and humiliation of women online.
After the incident gained public attention, Naipei issued a public apology to her family and friends. Reports also indicated that she later joined the church of Pastor Kanyari. Opande, on his part, expressed regret about what had happened and asked the public to allow both of them space to deal with the matter privately.
Despite the criticism directed at her, Odhiambo has remained firm in her position. Her remarks show that she is willing to continue speaking out against gender-based violence even when doing so attracts backlash online.
For the MP, calling out actions she believes are harmful is part of a broader effort to challenge behavior that undermines the dignity and safety of others.
