The National Police Service (NPS) has recovered a homemade firearm after police officers disrupted a suspected highway robbery operation along the Dagahaley–Mathangisi Road in Garissa County.
NPS said the operation was conducted on Monday, September 7, 2026, after members of the public alerted officers about people believed to be targeting motorists along the route.
“Police officers yesterday disrupted a suspected highway robbery operation along the Dagahaley–Mathangisi Road in Garissa County, following a tip-off from members of the public,” NPS said.
The officers were supported by National Police Reservists (NPRs) as they moved into the area to track down the individuals linked to the reported robberies.
According to the police service, the individuals had been intercepting motorists and robbing them at gunpoint.
Firearm recovered
The coordinated operation disrupted the reported robbery activity and led to the recovery of a homemade firearm.
NPS said the operation also prevented further attacks along the road, while efforts to identify those behind the incidents continued.
“The coordinated operation brought the suspected robbery to an abrupt halt, resulting in the recovery of a homemade firearm and the prevention of further attacks along the route,” the service said.
Police officers are now pursuing leads that could help establish the identities of those involved in the reported highway robberies.
NPS said the search remains ongoing as officers work to track down the people linked to the incidents.
“The search for the suspects remains ongoing, with officers pursuing all available leads to identify and apprehend those responsible,” NPS said.
The service said members of the public have an important role to play in helping police prevent crime by reporting suspicious activities.
