CCTV footage has revealed the final moments of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Were, who was shot dead on Valley Road, Nairobi.
The shocking footage shows a hooded man trailing the MP’s vehicle minutes before the deadly shooting. Police believe this man is the main suspect in what is now seen as a carefully planned assassination.
MP Were was shot four times at close range on Wednesday evening. According to detectives, the attacker approached the car during a red light, fired the shots through the window, and fled on a sports bike waiting nearby.
Before the murder, CCTV shows the MP’s car stopping briefly on Wabera Street. His bodyguard got out to deposit Ksh.20,000 into the MP’s phone at a nearby M-Pesa shop. During this time, a man with a bag was seen closely watching the car.
Moments later, the MP, his driver, and bodyguard left the area and took a different route to avoid traffic. But the suspect followed closely on a bike.
Around 7:40 p.m., the car stopped at a red light on Valley Road. The man got off the bike, walked up to the MP’s car, and shot him four times — hitting his chest and hand. He then ran back to the bike, and they sped off toward the city centre.
The driver and bodyguard were not harmed. The bodyguard told police he was caught by surprise and ducked for cover.
Once the attackers left, he rushed to help the MP, who was bleeding heavily. They drove him to Nairobi Hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.
Police recovered three spent cartridges at the scene and are now analyzing them. Detectives have questioned the MP’s driver, bodyguard, and the M-Pesa agent.
The investigation has now spread to Kasipul to explore whether the killing was politically motivated.
Police say they are reviewing more CCTV footage to track down the killer.
