President William Ruto’s cabinet secretary has fired at former president Uhuru Kenyatta following his recent remarks directed at Gen Zs and Millennials.
Kipchumba Murkomen, who is the Interior Cabinet Secretary, did not hold back when responding to Uhuru’s comments. As reported by Capital FM, Murkomen fired back at the former head of state, saying that Uhuru Kenyatta has suddenly become very clever and is now giving advice to the youth, something he hardly ever did when he was still in power.
Murkomen’s reaction came after Uhuru Kenyatta gave a public lecture in Uganda where he urged Gen Zs and Millennials to stand up and fight for their place in governance. Uhuru told the young people that they must take charge of their future and not wait for anyone to hand them leadership positions. He encouraged them to be brave, to question those in power, and to demand better governance.
His speech received a lot of attention both in Kenya and Uganda, with many young people sharing parts of it online and praising his boldness. However, others were quick to point out the irony, noting that when Uhuru was president, he had the chance to empower the youth but did very little to bring real change.
Murkomen criticized Uhuru for trying to appear like a champion of the youth now that he is no longer in charge. He said that if Uhuru truly cared about young people, he would have set the example during his presidency by appointing more young leaders to key government positions and creating opportunities that would allow them to thrive.
Instead, according to Murkomen, Uhuru’s leadership left many young Kenyans frustrated, unemployed, and feeling left behind. Murkomen questioned why Uhuru remained silent on youth issues for years but now wants to position himself as a voice for the younger generation after stepping down from office.
Murkomen’s remarks reflect a growing tension between leaders from the current administration and those associated with the previous regime. It also shows how the youth have become an important subject in Kenya’s political debates.
Many young people are demanding better leadership and more transparency, and politicians are increasingly trying to appeal to them.
While some see Uhuru’s message as timely and inspiring, others like Murkomen believe it is nothing more than empty talk coming too late. The exchange between Murkomen and Uhuru has raised fresh conversations about the role of former leaders in shaping public discourse after they leave office.
It has also raised questions about whether the current political class is genuinely interested in empowering young people or simply using them as talking points. They are questioning, demanding, and pushing for real change, whether the advice comes from former leaders or those currently in power.
