The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has strongly hinted that it might cut ties with nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba. The party accuses her of turning against the leadership and no longer being loyal to those who gave her the platform to serve in Parliament.
On Saturday, UDA Treasurer Japheth Nyakundi gave a direct message to the senator, clearly showing that her time in the ruling party may be over. Nyakundi said, “We are done with you. You are no longer a party member. You can’t bite the hands that feed you.”
This harsh comment followed an email from Senator Orwoba, sent to both Nyakundi and UDA Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro. The email said, “Good morning Sylvanus Osoro and Japheth Nyakundi… Gusii Community is watching you. Happy Sabbath.”
The message was seen as a warning or challenge, especially coming at a time when Orwoba is being linked with Fred Matiang’i, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary. Her association with Matiang’i, who has not been aligned with President William Ruto or the UDA, has raised eyebrows within the party.
Nyakundi responded by reminding her that in politics, the biggest price is loyalty, which he believes Orwoba has abandoned. He went on to say, “You have disregarded all that. We wish you all the best with your new party leader.”
UDA is already taking disciplinary action against her. A formal summons has been issued, accusing her of misconduct and disloyalty. The statement was signed by Charles Njenga, who chairs the party’s disciplinary committee.
The committee listed three incidents as proof of her alleged betrayal. First, she attended the welcoming ceremony of Fred Matiang’i at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Then she celebrated at Gusii Stadium during Matiang’i’s homecoming. The third issue was her appearance on Spice FM on April 22, where she openly questioned a key government policy, the workforce mobility scheme, which is part of President Ruto’s development plans.
The party believes these actions show that Orwoba is now aligned with another political movement. They argue that this is clear proof that she no longer supports the same values as UDA. The statement from the disciplinary committee said her conduct was not acceptable and showed that she had turned her back on the party that nominated her to the Senate.
She has now been summoned to appear before the committee on Friday, May 16 at 9:00 a.m. at the Hustler Plaza Fourth Floor Board Room. The meeting is expected to determine her fate in the party as UDA moves to deal with members who are seen as rebels within its ranks.
