As Kenya’s 2027 political contest gradually takes shape, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru is increasingly positioning herself at the centre of conversations involving some of the country’s most prominent opposition figures.
In recent engagements, Wanjiru has met Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Jubilee Party presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i, two politicians who are themselves being mentioned prominently in discussions over the opposition’s presidential contest.
While neither meeting should be interpreted as a formal endorsement of Wanjiru, the political significance of the encounters is difficult to ignore.

For a politician seeking to strengthen her influence ahead of 2027, access to leaders with presidential ambitions can itself become an important political signal.
Why Wanjiru matters
Wanjiru is not a newcomer to Kenya’s political arena.
The former Starehe MP and former assistant minister has maintained a political profile in Nairobi while also building influence through her religious leadership.
Her decision to engage senior opposition figures at a time when parties and presidential hopefuls are consulting across the country raises a broader question: what role could Wanjiru play in the political calculations of 2027?
Her value may not only be measured by whether she is seeking an elective position herself, but also by the networks, constituencies and political relationships she can bring to any emerging alliance.
Meeting Kalonzo
Wanjiru’s engagement with Kalonzo comes at a particularly significant moment for the Wiper leader.
Kalonzo has positioned himself as a major presidential contender ahead of the 2027 election and remains one of the figures whose name features prominently in discussions about a possible opposition coalition.

Kalonzo previously confirmed receiving Wanjiru and her son, Stephen Kariuki, for a wide-ranging engagement on matters of national importance.
Such an engagement does not amount to an endorsement, but it places Wanjiru within the orbit of a politician whose support and networks could become important in negotiations over the opposition’s eventual presidential ticket.
Matiang’i connection
Wanjiru has also met Fred Matiang’i, who was endorsed by Jubilee as its presidential candidate and has been campaigning to position himself for the 2027 contest.
Matiang’i hosted Wanjiru at a meeting that attracted political attention, with the former Interior Cabinet Secretary saying she had visited him for prayers, encouragement and counsel.
The meeting was significant because Matiang’i is not simply another opposition politician.
He is one of the individuals whose presidential ambitions have placed him in the middle of the wider debate over who should eventually lead the opposition into the 2027 election.
What the meetings signal
The significance of Wanjiru’s engagements with Kalonzo and Matiang’i may therefore lie less in the question of whether either politician has endorsed her and more in what her access to them reveals about her political standing.
At a time when presidential hopefuls are searching for influential voices, regional networks, religious constituencies and grassroots support, politicians who can connect different sections of the electorate can become valuable alliance partners.
Wanjiru’s meetings with two prominent presidential contenders therefore give her political profile an additional dimension.
They suggest that she remains a figure worth engaging as the political class begins calculating possible alliances ahead of 2027.
A crowded 2027 race
The 2027 presidential contest is already attracting several high-profile names, including President William Ruto, Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, Rigathi Gachagua and other opposition figures.
The crowded field makes political relationships increasingly important.
For Wanjiru, therefore, the significance of meeting senior presidential hopefuls may be found in the access itself.
