What began as a hopeful moment for a young family has turned into a long and painful struggle marked by illness, fear, and an overwhelming financial burden. For Yvonne Kahai, a 30-year-old mother from Nairobi, the joy of welcoming twin boys was quickly overshadowed by a life-threatening medical emergency that nearly cost her everything.

In early November, Yvonne’s health deteriorated rapidly while she was expecting her twins. She developed severe pneumonia, which affected her lungs and caused dangerously low oxygen levels. As her condition worsened, she was rushed to AAR Hospital on November 10, 2025, where doctors immediately realized that both her life and that of her unborn babies were at risk. The medical team had no option but to carry out an emergency Caesarean section to save the twins.

The surgery itself was successful, and the twin boys were safely delivered. However, Yvonne’s condition did not improve after the operation.

Instead, her lungs continued to struggle, and she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. What followed was a frightening period for her family, as Yvonne slipped into a coma that lasted for three weeks.

During that time, she depended entirely on medical support as doctors carried out numerous tests and treatments to repair the damage to her lungs.

Slowly, there has been some relief. Yvonne has begun responding to medication, and her doctors have confirmed that she is on the path to recovery. While the improvement in her health has brought hope to her loved ones, the crisis is far from over.

The cost of keeping her alive and supporting her recovery has grown to shocking levels. By December 14, the hospital bill had reached about KSh 9 million, a figure far beyond what her family can manage.

Her sister, Cynthia Makungu, has openly spoken about the strain this situation has placed on the family. She explained that they are struggling to understand how the bills rose so quickly, especially within such a short period.

According to Cynthia, the family has exhausted its resources and is now appealing to well-wishers and members of the public for help. She shared their story with TUKO, hoping it would reach people who may be willing to support them during this difficult time.

As Yvonne continues her recovery, her newborn twins remain in the neonatal unit. The babies are reported to be healthy, which is a small comfort to the family. However, they need to gain more weight before doctors can allow them to go home. The twins are under close medical observation, adding to the ongoing hospital costs.

This was Yvonne’s second pregnancy. Her first child was born nine years ago without any medical complications, making the current situation even harder for the family to process. What was expected to be another normal delivery instead turned into a prolonged medical emergency.

The case has drawn strong reactions online, with many Kenyans expressing concern over the high cost of healthcare. Some have questioned how families are expected to cope when sudden illness leads to bills running into millions of shillings. Others have called for reforms to protect patients from such financial shocks.

For those willing to assist, the family has shared an M-Pesa Buy Goods Till Number 3177910, marked for Yvonne Kahai.
