The Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, has said the government is focused on turning livestock farming into a profitable business that can change lives across the country.
Mueke spoke on Tuesday after touring Ongole Beef Farm in Laikipia County, where he praised the farm’s success in showing how private investors can help transform Kenya’s beef industry.

He said the government’s main goal is to promote livestock commercialisation so that farmers can earn better incomes from their animals.
“Our key goal is livestock commercialisation to transform livelihoods and make livestock a truly profitable enterprise for our farmers,” he said.

The PS noted that Ongole Beef has invested heavily in every part of the value chain — from growing animal feed and training farmers to using modern systems that trace meat from the farm to the final consumer.
“Ongole Beef is a strong example of how the private sector is driving this agenda — growing their own feed, using a traceability system that tracks meat from farm to fork, training farmers, and adding value through premium beef products,” Mueke said.
He said the farm’s success is proof that technology and good management can help farmers produce high-quality beef that meets both local and export market demands.

Mueke added that the government is supporting such partnerships to link more farmers to processors and markets, ensuring they earn fair prices for their animals.
Government pledges to support beef producers
The PS said his ministry will continue working with counties and cooperatives to strengthen the beef value chain through improved breeding, veterinary services, and access to markets.
“This working tour is crucial as we strengthen cooperatives, connect farmers to markets, and promote sustainable beef production across the country,” he said.
He assured farmers that the government is committed to creating a friendly environment for agribusinesses like Ongole Beef to thrive and build a stronger livestock economy for Kenya.
