Former Chief Justice David Maraga has denied allegations that his presidential ambitions are being backed by the state.
Speaking on Sunday, March 30, Maraga maintained that he is the most suitable candidate for the presidency in 2027. He added that he was still in consultations regarding his potential bid for State House.
“I am still engaging with various stakeholders. At the end of the day, the decision will rest with the people,” he stated.
Maraga is among the figures expected to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. Another prominent contender from the Gusii region is former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who has been linked to a potential Jubilee Party ticket.
Speculation has emerged that Maraga’s candidacy might be aimed at weakening Matiang’i’s influence. However, the former CJ dismissed the claims, saying, “Just relax. In due course, you will know whether I am a state project or not.”
Maraga also urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to ensure that individuals of integrity are selected to oversee the 2027 polls.
“We hope that those tasked with the process will appoint honest individuals who can guarantee a free and fair election,” he emphasized.
