The Meru Central Sub-County administration has issued an alert following an outbreak of Anthrax disease in humans, prompting urgent containment measures.

In a notice dated February 12, 2025, Deputy County Commissioner Samuel K. Njuguna directed all administrative officers, including chiefs and their assistants, to enforce strict measures to curb the spread of the disease. The directives include sensitization campaigns on anthrax transmission and effects, prohibition of home slaughter, and arrest of farmers who fail to vaccinate their livestock or engage in illegal slaughtering for human consumption.

Anthrax, a highly infectious bacterial disease, is often transmitted from infected animals to humans, primarily through contact with contaminated meat or animal products. Authorities warn that failure to control its spread could pose a severe public health threat in the region.

The government is working closely with veterinary and health officers to monitor the situation and prevent further infections. Residents are urged to report suspected cases and avoid consuming meat from unverified sources.

Further updates on the outbreak are expected as health officials continue to assess and contain the situation.
