Four suspected poachers have been arrested in Laikipia County after police recovered 38.6 kilograms of game meat during a coordinated security operation targeting illegal wildlife activities.

On Saturday, October 17, 2026, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that officers from Matanya Police Station, working alongside other security agencies, arrested the four suspects following an intelligence-led operation in the Nanyuki area.

Four suspects arrested

According to NPS, the operation targeted individuals suspected of possessing illegally obtained wildlife meat in different parts of Laikipia County.

The four suspects were identified by their areas of residence as Weru-ine, Matanya Centre, Waguthiru and Mitero.

Police said the suspects were found in possession of 38.6 kilograms of game meat, which was recovered during the operation.

“In a coordinated, intelligence-led operation, police officers from Matanya Police Station in Laikipia County, working closely with other security agencies, arrested four suspects today, 17 October 2026,” NPS stated.

The suspects were taken into police custody pending processing and arraignment in court.

However, police did not disclose their names, the wildlife species involved or the exact locations where the meat was obtained.

Authorities also did not indicate whether the suspects were directly involved in killing wildlife or were transporting or selling the recovered meat.

Police issue warning

Following the arrests, NPS warned Kenyans against engaging in illegal wildlife trade, emphasising the penalties associated with wildlife offences.

“The National Police Service reminds the public that the possession, trade and consumption of game meat are strictly prohibited under the laws of Kenya,” the statement read.

“Poaching and dealing in wildlife trophies undermine conservation efforts and carry severe legal penalties.”

The operation highlights ongoing efforts by security agencies to combat illegal wildlife exploitation in Laikipia, a county known for its wildlife conservancies and protected habitats.

Police urged residents to report suspected poaching activities and illegal wildlife trade to help protect the country’s wildlife resources.

Members of the public can report suspicious activities through emergency numbers 999 or 911, the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline on 0800 722 203, or WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.

The four suspects remain in custody as police prepare to present them before court to answer charges related to the recovered game meat.
