Justice Njoki Ndung’u gains AU backing in ICC judgeship bid

Kenya’s push for stronger African representation at the International Criminal Court received a major boost after African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf publicly praised Justice Njoki Ndung'u for her integrity, judicial experience and commitment to international justice during a high level meeting at the AU headquarters.

Kenya’s campaign to secure a seat at the International Criminal Court has received a major boost after the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, met and endorsed Supreme Court Judge Justice Njoki Ndung’u during high level engagements at the African Union headquarters.

In a statement shared by the African Union, the AU Commission Chairperson praised Justice Njoki Ndung’u’s distinguished legal career, describing her as one of Africa’s most accomplished jurists with extensive experience in both national and international legal systems.

The AU boss highlighted her service at the Supreme Court of Kenya and recognised her contributions within multilateral institutions including the African Union and the United Nations. He further described Kenya’s justice system as among the continent’s most respected and advanced.

The endorsement is seen as a significant diplomatic win for Kenya as it pushes for stronger African representation within international judicial institutions.

The African Union leadership noted that Justice Ndung’u’s integrity, expertise and longstanding commitment to justice make her well placed to contribute meaningfully to the work of the International Criminal Court.

Justice Ndung’u thanked the AU Commission Chairperson for the warm reception and encouragement, reaffirming her dedication to international law, human rights and the rule of law.

Her candidature has continued to attract support across legal and diplomatic circles due to her decades of experience in constitutional law, governance and judicial reforms. She is widely respected for championing legal protections for women and vulnerable groups, including her role in advancing Kenya’s Sexual Offences Act.

Kenya is seeking to rally African support ahead of the ICC elections, with Justice Ndung’u’s campaign positioning the country as a key voice in strengthening Africa’s influence within global justice institutions.
