President William Ruto has defended his decision to drop former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi in the recent Cabinet reshuffle, stating that he had given him multiple opportunities to serve.
Speaking during a media roundtable at Sagana State Lodge on Monday, Ruto explained that Muturi had initially faced challenges when appointed as Attorney General. According to the President, Muturi admitted that he had been out of legal practice for an extended period, having served as a magistrate, Member of Parliament, and National Assembly Speaker.
“He told me he might struggle with the role. I take responsibility because I persuaded him to take the job, but after some time, I noticed he was indeed overwhelmed. That’s why I reassigned him to a different role as a Cabinet Secretary,” Ruto stated.
However, Ruto noted that during his tenure as a minister, Muturi began skipping Cabinet meetings, which made it difficult for him to fulfill his duties.
“He was a minister but went on strike by refusing to attend Cabinet meetings. What was I supposed to do?” the President posed.
Ruto emphasized that he believes in second chances, which is why he offered Muturi a new role despite his struggles as Attorney General. However, he argued that Muturi ultimately chose his own path.
“I always give people second chances because many redeem themselves. I gave my good friend Muturi another opportunity, but in the end, he removed himself from the position. What more could I have done?” he said.
The President further reassured that Muturi was well-catered for, noting that as a former Speaker, he has a good pension and would not experience financial hardship.
