Nelson Koech defends Uhuru Kenyatta over push to remove retirement benefits

Belgut MP Nelson Koech has opposed efforts to withdraw former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s retirement benefits, saying such a move would be unfair and unnecessary despite political differences between the two sides.

The debate emerged after reports indicated that Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei had filed a motion seeking to strip Uhuru of the benefits and allowances he receives as a retired Head of State.

According to Cherargei, the former President violated regulations by actively participating in partisan politics after leaving office in 2022.

The proposal has since sparked mixed reactions among leaders and members of the public, with some supporting the motion while others argue that retirement benefits protected by law should not be used as a political tool.

Speaking on the matter, Nelson Koech strongly defended Uhuru’s right to continue enjoying the benefits granted to him under the Constitution. The Belgut MP said leaders should avoid engaging in what he described as petty politics and instead focus on matters that directly improve the lives of Kenyans.

“Wachana na hii maneno kidogo kidogo tunazungumza hapa. Mambo yenye haisaidi. Uhuru Kenyatta, if we were to deal with him, honestly, why would you want to, sasa mambo ya perks ya mtu ambayo Iko kwa Katiba, unasemaje itolewe. Let us do to others what you want to be done to you. Wacha Uhuru aende na zake,” Nelson Koech said.

Koech maintained that although some leaders may disagree with Uhuru politically, there is no need to target his retirement package.

He warned against creating a culture where former leaders are punished after leaving office, saying such actions could set a dangerous precedent for the country’s politics.

The MP further urged leaders to concentrate on fulfilling promises made to Kenyans rather than engaging in endless political battles. According to him, citizens are more concerned about the high cost of living, job opportunities, and service delivery than political fights over a former president’s benefits.

The discussion around Uhuru’s retirement package continues to attract attention as leaders from different political camps weigh in on the matter.

While supporters of the motion insist retired presidents should remain neutral in politics, opponents argue that constitutional benefits should not be withdrawn because of political disagreements.
