Speaking during an exclusive podcast Mwelekeo’s Angel Mbuthia and host Tony Nyakoko reflected on both the struggles and the immense opportunities that young people face today.
Tony opened the conversation with a reminder of the journey so far. “From university leadership to national regional and even global platforms the story of Kenya’s youth has proven that lived experience backed by knowledge and courage can influence policy and inspire transformation” he remarked.

Angel who has served in leadership spaces ranging from the University of Nairobi’s Students Organization to the Kenya National Youth Council Advisory Board to the COMESA Youth Advisory Panel and the All Africa Students Union agreed that the next five to ten years present a defining moment for Kenya’s youth.
She emphasized that young people are not simply resisting or protesting but are creating new possibilities.
“The future is not tomorrow it is today and it lies in the hands of our youth. We are not just protesting or resisting. We are building creating innovating and showing that young people can meaningfully participate in governance and economic growth” she said.

Mwelekeo Insights has recently studied how older generations viewed Gen Z after the June 2024 protests. The findings showed that while many admired their courage some questioned their methods.
Angel explained that this reflected a healthy intergenerational tension which if managed well could unlock dialogue and much needed reforms.
The discussion also touched on socio economic realities. According to Mwelekeo’s analysis unemployment the rising cost of living and unequal access to opportunities remain the most pressing challenges.
Even so Angel expressed optimism that technology digital innovation and youth driven enterprises could provide solutions if backed by inclusive policies.
Closing the conversation Tony affirmed Mwelekeo’s mission. “At Mwelekeo Insights our mission remains the same to take research beyond the numbers to spark conversations and to connect evidence with lived experiences. Today’s discussion has shown just how important that bridge really is.”
