Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba on Sunday sparked fresh speculation that a political truce between President William Ruto and his former Deputy President Hon Rigathi Gachagua could be on the way.

While speaking to members of the media shortly after attending a church service in Thika Town alongside former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i, the vocal lawmaker from the Mount Kenya region said that what the country needs right now is honest leadership.

She emphasised the need for leaders to focus more on delivering real development and ensuring that the taxes collected from citizens are used to improve their lives.

Wamuchomba, though careful not to mention Gachagua by name or imply she was speaking for him, noted that leaders from the Mount Kenya region have never supported violence as a way of solving political disputes.

She said that as of Sunday, many of these leaders had arrived at a shared understanding. Their new priority is to push for national dialogue that is honest, inclusive and genuinely aimed at solving the country’s problems. She added that President Ruto must also show sincerity if any meaningful dialogue is to happen.

According to Wamuchomba, the proposed talks should be centred on the needs of ordinary Kenyans. She insisted that the conversation should not revolve around who gets what position in government.

Instead, it should focus on healing the nation and bringing justice to families that lost their loved ones during recent protests.

She also stressed that the Kenya Kwanza administration must commit to fulfilling the promises it made to the people during the 2022 general election campaign. She said it is the government’s responsibility to deliver on the pledges made before assuming office.
