Kenya has taken a significant step toward enhancing food security and agricultural productivity through a new partnership with the United Arab Emirates. President William Ruto on Wednesday 12th announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Kenya and Abu Dhabi-based agribusiness firm Al Dahra, aimed at expanding the Galana-Kulalu irrigation project.

The agreement is part of Kenya’s broader strategy to build on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the UAE to drive economic development and improve livelihoods. Speaking at the signing ceremony, President Ruto emphasized the critical role of irrigation in ensuring food security for the nation.

“Irrigation is a key pillar of our food security value chain. Our plan is to ensure increased agricultural production and productivity to feed the nation. We are building on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between Kenya and the United Arab Emirates to initiate development, including irrigation projects, that impact the lives of Kenyans,” said President William Ruto said after the signing.

The Galana-Kulalu irrigation project, a flagship food security initiative, aims to transform arid and semi-arid land into a productive agricultural hub. The partnership with Al Dahra is expected to provide expertise, technology, and investment to accelerate the project’s implementation.

This development aligns with Kenya’s broader vision of leveraging strategic international partnerships to bolster agricultural output, reduce dependency on rain-fed farming, and enhance the country’s resilience against climate change-related food shortages.

With this latest MoU, Kenya and the UAE continue to strengthen their bilateral economic ties, signaling a commitment to sustainable development and mutual growth. The expansion of the Galana-Kulalu irrigation project is poised to make a lasting impact on Kenya’s agricultural sector, ensuring a stable food supply for millions of citizens.
