Narok County Under Scrutiny for Sh8 Million Spent on Rhino Conservation

The Narok County government is facing public scrutiny following reports that it spent Ksh 8 million on rhino conservation, with concerns raised over accountability. Governor Patrick Ntutu’s administration has come under the spotlight as questions arise over how the funds were utilized.

The controversy was highlighted by a report from Nation, which indicated that the county government had difficulties accounting for the expenditure. This has sparked debate among residents and conservation stakeholders, who are calling for transparency in the management of wildlife funds.

In response, the Narok County Government issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to wildlife conservation. The statement, posted on social media, defended the spending, noting that Narok leads in revenue collection, largely due to its thriving tourism sector driven by wildlife attractions.

“We generate most of our revenue from wildlife, particularly through tourism,” the statement read. “As such, we must and will continue to protect our wildlife through various interventions, some of which will be costly.”

The county justified the expenditure as part of a collaborative effort between the government and development partners to safeguard wildlife. The administration argued that without proper conservation efforts, the revenue generated from tourism would be at risk.

However, critics argue that while wildlife conservation is crucial, the county government must provide a detailed breakdown of how the Sh8 million was spent. Conservation groups and civil society organizations have called for an independent audit to ensure funds are used effectively.

The issue has sparked a larger conversation about financial transparency in county governments, with residents urging authorities to ensure accountability in public spending.

As the debate continues, all eyes remain on Governor Ntutu’s administration to clarify the expenditure and reassure the public of its commitment to responsible governance.
