A staff member of the Nakuru Water and Sewerage Company has been arrested by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission over allegations of bribery.

The suspect, Leonard Cheruiyot Mutai, works as a Leak Detection Officer at the water company. He was arrested on March 23, 2026, after a member of the public reported the matter to the commission in Nakuru.

According to the commission, the complainant claimed that the officer asked for Ksh.15,000 in order to help replace a confiscated water meter at a home in Langa Langa Estate. The resident reportedly felt pressured by the request and decided to report the matter to investigators.

After receiving the complaint, officers from the anti-corruption agency organized an operation to verify the claims and gather evidence. The operation led to the arrest of the suspect while he was allegedly receiving the Ksh.15,000 that had been demanded from the complainant.

During the arrest, investigators searched the suspect and recovered several sums of money. The officers found the Ksh.15,000 that was allegedly paid as a bribe. They also discovered Ksh.100,000 hidden inside a pair of socks and another Ksh.18,000 in the suspect’s coat pocket.

Authorities said the recovery of the money formed part of the evidence that will be used as investigations continue. The commission has not yet confirmed the source of the additional cash that was found during the arrest.

After the operation, Mutai was taken to the commission’s South Rift Regional Office in Nakuru where he was processed by detectives. He was later transferred to Central Police Station where he was held as investigations continued.

Officials from the anti-corruption body said the suspect will be released on a police cash bail of Ksh.20,000 as investigations proceed. The case remains under review as detectives continue gathering more information before deciding on possible charges.
