The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties has officially gazetted the dissolution of the Amani National Congress (ANC), bringing an end to its decade-long existence in Kenya’s political landscape.

According to a gazette notice dated March 7, 2025, Registrar of Political Parties Ann Nderitu confirmed that ANC resolved to dissolve voluntarily following a decision reached at its Special National Delegates Congress on February 7, 2025.

“Under sections 9 and 34C of the Political Parties Act, Cap 7D, and Paragraph 22 of the Second Schedule to the Political Parties Act, it is notified for the information of the general public that ANC at its Special National Delegates Congress of Friday, February 7, 2025, resolved to voluntarily dissolve in line with the ANC Party constitution,” the notice reads in part.

The party, previously associated with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, had been under the leadership of Lamu Governor Issa Timamy. Despite months of downplaying dissolution talks, ANC has now merged with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

On June 2, 2024, ANC National Chairman Kelvin Lunani dismissed speculation about the party folding, stating, “All I am sure of is that we are a partner party in the Kenya Kwanza government with UDA, and we are not folding parties anytime soon. That would be a tall order.”

However, seven months later, ANC leader Timamy and UDA chairperson Cecily Mbarire confirmed the merger.

“Further to the inclusion of former ANC officials in the leadership of the UDA Party, other staff members will also be incorporated into the secretariat of the party, while structures and organs of the ANC will be integrated into the UDA Party,” Mbarire announced during a State House event on January 17, 2025.

She added that UDA would undertake post-merger activities, including harmonizing shared core values, rebranding, and membership recruitment drives.

With its official dissolution, ANC now ceases to exist as an independent political entity, marking the latest restructuring within the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
