Two of Kenya’s most recognisable news anchors have finally spoken about the nature of their close bond, ending years of speculation about whether their friendship could turn into romance. Lofty Matambo and Fridah Mwaka made it clear that they have never dated and do not plan to.
The two co-anchor prime-time news on NTV Kenya, where their natural chemistry has captured the attention of many viewers.
Their smooth delivery of news in both English and Kiswahili, along with their light moments on air, has often led fans to believe there was something more between them. For a long time, many people were convinced that their strong connection would eventually become romantic.
Speaking during an interview with YouTuber Oga Obinna, the two addressed the rumours directly. Mwaka explained that not every close relationship must lead to love.
She said some friendships are more meaningful when they remain just that. According to her, what they share is built on trust, respect, and clear boundaries. She noted that introducing romance could change the dynamic they value so much.
Mwaka added that like any friendship, they sometimes disagree. However, they have learned how to handle their differences in a mature way without hurting their bond. She stressed that protecting their friendship has always come first.
Matambo agreed with her views and said their connection goes deeper than what viewers see on television. Over the years, he revealed, some men interested in Mwaka have approached him to understand her better.
From those experiences, he realised that anyone who wants to be part of her life must respect their friendship.
The presenters also admitted that their closeness has affected their dating lives. Some potential partners assume they are already together, which makes others hesitant.
While Mwaka kept her love life private, Matambo confirmed he is currently seeing someone and may introduce her to the public later this year.
They said their strong on-screen chemistry works because of honesty, boundaries, and mutual respect. They are not willing to risk that for romance.
