The process of selecting a new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is on track, with the commission expected to be in place by May, according to IEBC selection panel vice chairperson, Ms. Lindah Kiome.

Speaking on during a press briefing on Tuesday, February 11th, Ms. Kiome emphasized that all applications must be submitted before the deadline on the 15th at 5 PM. She further stated that the selection panel aims to forward the names of nominees to President William Ruto by April 25th and that a fully functioning commission will be ready by May.

“We expect to have a commission by April when we will give the names of the nominees to His Excellency the President of the Republic of Kenya. Thereafter, the process will continue as per the law, with the next step being parliamentary approval, and from there, the appointees will assume office. If we give the names by April 25th, it means by May we should have a commission in accordance with the law,” said Ms. Kiome.

The formation of a new IEBC is crucial as Kenya prepares for the upcoming 2027 general elections where the country has already felt with politics already taking shape.  The previous commission was disbanded following the disputes witnessed in hotly contested 2022 general election, necessitating the appointment of new officials to oversee the country’s electoral processes.
