Homa Bay Deputy Governor, Joseph Oyugi Magwanga, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on the night of Sunday, May 11, 2025.
The attack took place near his home in Kabuor Village, Kasipul constituency, at around 9 p.m. However, Magwanga was not in the car when the incident happened.
Magwanga had received information that someone was following him, so he decided to switch vehicles before heading home.
His official car, which was carrying his security team, was ambushed by armed attackers. The security detail returned fire, and the assailants quickly ran away. Thankfully, no one was hurt during the attack.

The police are now investigating the incident to find out who was behind the attack and why they targeted the Deputy Governor. So far, no one has been arrested, and the motive behind the attack is still unclear.
However, some believe that the attack could be politically motivated.
This incident comes barely weeks after the shocking murder of former Kasipul MP, Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was gunned down in Nairobi.
His death shocked the country, and investigations have revealed that it was a planned assassination involving a senior government official working in the Office of the President.

The connection between the two events has raised concerns about increasing political violence in the region.
Magwanga, who had been receiving threats before the attack, has asked residents of Homa Bay to stay calm and avoid any violence. Local leaders have also condemned the attack and called for quick action to bring the attackers to justice.
As the police continue with their investigations, both the people of Homa Bay and political leaders are calling for better security measures to protect public figures in the county.
