Siaya Governor James Orengo, who just a few weeks ago was openly criticizing President William Ruto over his government’s policies, has now made a complete turnaround. The seasoned politician is now praising the Social Health Authority, SHA.
This unexpected endorsement came shortly after Governor Orengo led a delegation from Siaya County to State House. The visit itself was seen by many as a move no one would have imagined just days earlier.
While addressing the press, Orengo described SHA as a success story that is already making a difference in Siaya. He revealed that under SHA, claims worth 281 million shillings have been raised in the county. Out of this, 180 million shillings have already been paid, with only 101 million shillings pending.
“SHA is a good story. It has also improved our own source of revenue quite significantly,” said Governor Orengo.
The remarks marked a sharp change in tone from the governor, who had been among those questioning the effectiveness of new health policies introduced by the national government. His comments now suggest a willingness to work together for the benefit of county residents.

Governor Orengo further noted that the implementation of SHA had brought improvements in healthcare delivery across Siaya. Health facilities are now receiving payments faster and with more reliability. This has allowed the county to redirect funds to other critical areas of development.
Observers believe the governor’s change of heart could be strategic. By building bridges with the national government, Siaya may stand to gain more support for its development agenda.
For now, what stands out is that a vocal critic has become a key supporter. Orengo’s public approval of SHA signals a significant political and policy shift.
All the same, it remains to be seen if the new tune by Orengo will last for longer owing to his past behavior where he sends mixed signals when it comes to political behaviour.
