A police operation in Migori County has led to the arrest of two men suspected of being members of a criminal gang and the recovery of five pangas believed to have been intended for use in criminal activities.
The arrests were made along Nthiwa Road in Yamase after detectives received information about a group of people suspected to be armed with crude weapons and moving in two vehicles along the route.
Detectives from the Operation Action Team (OAT) acted on the information and moved to intercept the suspected group. Their operation led them to a silver Toyota Voxy, registration number KDB 463W, which was stopped at Yamase.
Two men identified as Hillary Odhiambo and James Oloo Otieno were arrested during the operation. Detectives then searched the vehicle as part of their efforts to establish what the occupants were carrying.
The search led to the recovery of five pangas and other crude weapons. Police believe the weapons may have been intended for use in criminal activities, although investigations are still ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The two suspects were taken into custody together with the recovered weapons. They are currently undergoing processing as detectives prepare to present them in court.
Police have not indicated the specific offence the suspects are expected to face, with investigations continuing to determine whether they were linked to any planned criminal activity or other incidents reported in the area.
Meanwhile, detectives have continued pursuing other leads arising from the operation. Authorities believe more people may have been part of the group that was reportedly travelling along the route.
The ongoing investigations are expected to establish the identities and whereabouts of the other suspected members and determine their possible role in the activities under investigation.
The arrests come as security officers continue to rely on intelligence-led operations to identify and disrupt suspected criminal activities before they occur. Police are also expected to examine the recovered weapons and other evidence as investigations into the case continue.
The two suspects are expected to remain in police custody pending the completion of processing and their arraignment in court.
