A Catholic priest has been shot dead by suspected bandits in the Tot area of Kerio Valley, Elgeyo Marakwet, just days after another priest was killed in Nyahururu. The victim, Father Alloyce Cheruiyot Bett, was on his way to a church service when the attackers struck.
Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Commander Peter Mulinge confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the killers. The region has been grappling with rising insecurity, prompting a major police operation to restore peace.
This tragic incident comes barely a week after another Catholic priest in Nyahururu was brutally murdered under mysterious circumstances. That priest had recently hosted former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at a church event, where several leaders had contributed gifts and money.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Nyahururu priest’s killers may have been targeting those church contributions. Police believe the attackers were after the funds and valuables that had been donated during the well-attended event.

The back-to-back killings have sparked fear and outrage among religious leaders and local communities. Many are now questioning the safety of clergy members, especially in areas affected by crime and banditry.
Locals in Tot described Father Bett as a humble and dedicated servant of God who had served the community faithfully for years. His sudden death has left many in shock and mourning.
Police say security has been intensified in Kerio Valley, and they are pursuing leads on the attackers. Meanwhile, Church leaders are calling on the government to provide better protection for clergy and ensure justice for both priests.
As investigations continue, the Church and the public are demanding answers and swift action to end the cycle of violence. The deaths of two priests in such a short span have brought national attention to the security challenges facing both Elgeyo Marakwet and Nyahururu.
