Hon. Simon Mbugua has emerged as the leading contender in the race for the Kamukunji parliamentary seat after a public opinion survey by Mwelekeo Insights placed him well ahead of other potential candidates.

The survey, released under the Kamukunji Member of Parliament Survey, found that Mbugua enjoys the support of 63.1% of respondents, giving him a commanding lead in one of Nairobi’s closely watched constituencies.

Incumbent MP Yusuf Hassan of Jubilee came second with 21.4%, while Hussein Mohamed of UDA polled 15.1%. Only 0.4% of respondents said they were undecided.

The findings indicate that Mbugua currently holds a substantial advantage, with support nearly three times that of Yusuf Hassan and more than four times that of Hussein Mohamed.

Strong position

The poll places Mbugua in a favourable position as political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election gradually intensify.

Kamukunji remains one of Nairobi’s most competitive constituencies, with its diverse population, vibrant business community and active political environment often making electoral contests highly competitive.

Securing support above the 60 per cent mark in such a constituency suggests widespread name recognition and considerable acceptance among respondents captured in the survey.

If voting were conducted today and the poll reflected the final outcome, Mbugua would enter the election as the clear frontrunner.

Kamukunji landscape

According to the 2022 electoral register, Kamukunji had 122,061 registered voters, making it one of Nairobi County’s significant parliamentary constituencies.

Within that context, a candidate polling above 60 per cent enjoys an early advantage, particularly when the nearest competitor records just over 20 per cent.

The survey also suggests that Yusuf Hassan faces the challenge of narrowing a sizeable gap should he seek another term, while Hussein Mohamed would need to significantly expand his support base.

The 0.4% undecided vote further indicates that most respondents had already settled on their preferred candidate at the time the survey was conducted.

As with all opinion polls, the findings represent public sentiment during the survey period and could change depending on political developments, party nominations, alliances, campaign strategies and voter turnout.
