Comedian and event promoter Oga Obinna has called on Kenyans to avoid turning the hugely popular Majembe versus Mbavu Destroyer boxing match into a political affair. This comes as he gears up to lead the two fighters to State House for a special meeting.
The much-anticipated “Vurugu” showdown, which took place on April 4, 2026, captured widespread attention nationwide by mixing sports, entertainment, and notable celebrity backing.
President William Ruto had previously promised KSh 1 million to each of the boxers during a casual session at State House, joined by Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o. Several other politicians, such as Babu Owino, Jalang’o, and Karen Nyamu, were linked to the event, triggering online discussions about possible political influence.
In strong appeals both before and after the bout, Obinna cautioned political figures against using the fight as a campaign platform.
He made it clear that no one, including Members of Parliament, would be granted access without a proper ticket, insisting that the spotlight must stay on the fighters and the sport itself, rather than political appearances.
“Do not politicize this thing,” Obinna urged Kenyans repeatedly. He emphasized that the event was meant to promote local boxing talent and open new doors for athletes, not to help politicians gain publicity.
In widely shared videos, he firmly stated: “If you don’t have a ticket, don’t come,” a direct warning to any leaders hoping to capitalize on the fight’s massive popularity.
Even with pre-fight controversy including claims from critics that the match was staged (which Obinna and his team have strongly denied) the event successfully shone a bright light on Kenyan boxing.
Sources indicate that Obinna’s promotion brought in impressive earnings, as ringside tickets sold at high prices and the bout attracted large audiences through online streaming services.
