Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has called on Tiriki elders to follow traditional rites in the burial of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo. He specifically suggested placing a torch inside Jirongo’s casket, citing cultural customs for deaths under unclear circumstances.

Speaking during an initiation ceremony in Milima Ward, Natembeya explained that Tiriki burial traditions dictate the use of a lit torch when a community member dies mysteriously. He noted that the torch symbolically illuminates those responsible for the death and ensures justice is served.

According to the governor, the torch continues to “illuminate” anyone involved in the death until the truth is revealed. Natembeya emphasized that such rites have historically applied to leaders who opposed state excesses and died under suspicious conditions.

Natembeya said, in accordance with Tiriki culture, Jirongo should not be buried quietly without invoking these traditions. He believes that applying the torch ritual would bring peace to the deceased and ensure accountability for any foul play.

The governor’s remarks come after a delegation of Tiriki elders visited Jirongo’s home to invoke curses against anyone suspected of causing his death. The elders prayed that Jirongo’s spirit would pursue wrongdoers relentlessly and deny them peace.

Elder Wandabuli, dressed in African Divine Church attire, said the spirit of Jirongo should follow anyone involved in his demise to the grave. Another elder, Thomas Ingara, who leads Tiriki rituals, described Jirongo as a pride of the community and warned that anyone involved in his death would face consequences.

Natembeya’s call for the torch ritual forms part of the funeral rites likely to be performed on Jirongo. The former MP’s burial is scheduled to take place at Lumakanda on December 30. Community leaders are keen to uphold traditions while seeking justice for the late politician.

The governor stressed that Tiriki customs are crucial for preserving cultural identity and ensuring that deaths under suspicious circumstances are properly acknowledged. He urged elders to maintain these rituals to honor Jirongo and safeguard community values.

The torch ritual is deeply symbolic in Tiriki culture. It represents illumination, accountability, and the pursuit of justice for unresolved deaths. Natembeya believes it will ensure that anyone responsible for Jirongo’s death does not escape notice.

The community continues to prepare for the burial with traditional ceremonies. Natembeya’s remarks highlight the importance of cultural practices in addressing unexplained deaths and maintaining social harmony within the Tiriki community.
