Catholic priest in Ghana has gone viral after delivering a candid and relatable sermon, about managing feelings and resisting temptation.

Father Emmanuel Obeng Codjoe of St. John the Evangelist Church in Adenta addressed a question that many young people often ask about priests and celibacy.

Speaking during a Sunday service, he openly acknowledged that priests are human beings who experience emotions and desires like everyone else.

Catholic priests take a vow of celibacy, committing themselves to serve God and His people without marrying or engaging in romantic relationships. However, Father Emmanuel explained that ordination does not remove natural human feelings.

“Some of the youth ask me, ‘Father, when you see ladies, do you have feelings?’ and I respond, ‘It’s not easy, it’s not a joke,’” he said, drawing laughter from the congregation.

He emphasised that priests are not “made of wood” or supernatural beings. “I am not made of wood; I have feelings too. We are all struggling. We are all doing our best, by the grace of God, to live in a way that pleases Him,” he stated.

Father Emmanuel used his personal honesty to encourage Christians to believe that resisting temptation is possible with God’s help. He urged worshippers to let go of anger and lust, reminding them that everyone is called to live a holy life.

Quoting the teachings of Jesus Christ, he noted that even entertaining lustful thoughts is considered sinful. He challenged believers to avoid sinful behaviour not only in church but also in their workplaces and daily lives.

With the Lent season underway, the priest reminded Catholics that fasting should go beyond abstaining from food. He encouraged them to abstain from sin as well, urging them to consciously choose what is right.

His sermon sparked widespread reactions online, with many praising his honesty and practical guidance.

Reactions: EyeredInc: “I prefer leaders who tell it like it is.” Mayfair Ashong: Disclaimer: “It’s not NPP, but it is possible ooo” that specific possibility now looks improbable. “I don’t understand why people comment under the video anyway,” said Rev. Osei.

“Do some of you understand humor?” “We constantly pray for grace to overcome our struggles,” said Timaha Strands. God, please help us! I am grateful for this useful message, Fr. Cross.
