The media industry is mourning the sudden loss of one of its most respected voices, veteran journalist Ben Ochieng’ Obodo, who passed away unexpectedly.
According to his family, Obodo appeared to be in good health and had spent the evening actively engaging with fans and friends online, even posting late into the night about the UEFA match between Arsenal and Real Madrid. Tragically, he would never see the morning.

At around 2:00 a.m., while sleeping at his home in Nairobi, Obodo experienced severe chest pains. His children rushed him to the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Obodo’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his colleagues and the broader media fraternity. Many have paid tribute to his passion, generosity, and the remarkable journalistic spirit he brought to the field.
Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) President Zubeida Kananu, in a heartfelt statement, praised Obodo for his mentorship and unwavering dedication to nurturing young journalists. “Ben was always willing to lend a hand—not just with guidance but with encouragement,” she noted.
Through CEO Ezekiel Omboga, the KEG has requested prayers and support for Obodo’s family as they navigate this painful loss. “We stand with them during this difficult time, praying for comfort as they come to terms with the loss,” said Omboga.
Obodo’s legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the stories he told, and the journalists he inspired.
