Robert Alai files complaint against NTV over allegedly misleading Orengo interview promo

A complaint has been filed with the Media Council of Kenya by Nairobi County Assembly Member Robert Alai over a promotional post aired by NTV Kenya about an interview with Siaya Governor James Orengo. Alai argues that the station shared information that was not true and created public expectations that were not met.

The issue arose from a social media post shared on December 29, 2025, ahead of a prime-time interview hosted by David Muthoka.

In the promo, NTV suggested that Orengo would expose powerful figures allegedly trying to “sell ODM.” The post carried a bold banner and quickly spread online, drawing strong reactions from the public.

According to Alai, the actual interview told a different story. During the discussion, Orengo clearly said that the people involved would not be named at that time.

He did not give identities or provide any proof to support the claims hinted at in the promo. Alai says this made the promotion misleading and unfair to viewers.

In his complaint, Alai cites violations of journalistic standards, including rules on accuracy, fairness, and responsible use of headlines and promos. He also refers to laws under the Media Council Act that allow action against media houses that break ethical rules.

Alai further links the matter to constitutional and international standards on responsible media practice.

He warns that misleading political reporting, especially as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections, can damage public trust and cause unnecessary tension.

He is asking the Media Council to investigate the matter and consider steps such as a public apology, corrections across all platforms, and training for staff involved in content promotion. NTV has not issued a public response, and the council is expected to review the complaint.
