Fresh allegations by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have placed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at the centre of a high-profile murder investigation after DCI Director Mohamed Amin claimed that investigators established communication between Gachagua and key suspects linked to the killing of psychiatrist Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Amin alleged that Gachagua had been in contact with one of the main suspects as well as the boda boda rider believed to have played a role in the fatal shooting.
The DCI boss questioned why a politician would allegedly communicate with individuals under investigation, saying the suspects arrested on Thursday evening were attempting to flee and were almost crossing the country’s border.
“Gachagua was in communication with one of the suspects in the Dr Mutiso murder. Gachagua was also in communication with the boda boda rider. Suspects we arrested last evening were on the run almost crossing the border. Why would a politician want to bangle our investigations?” Amin said.
The allegations emerged as the DCI announced what it described as major progress in the investigation into Dr. Mutiso’s killing on July 29. Detectives said they had arrested the suspected gunman, recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting and uncovered evidence allegedly linking serving police officers to the murder.
According to investigators, Dr. Mutiso was travelling in an Uber after leaving Tanga Heights Apartments along Bamboo Lane in Nairobi on her way to the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health in Upper Hill. At around 9.23am, the Uber slowed after encountering a black Toyota Prado that had partially blocked the road in Mawensi. Detectives allege that a gunman then emerged and fired several shots at the rear seat where Dr. Mutiso was sitting.
The Uber driver rushed her to Kenyatta National Hospital, but she was pronounced dead after suffering three gunshot wounds.
Amin said detectives from the Homicide Investigations Bureau, supported by forensic experts and intelligence officers, took over the investigation and quickly gathered evidence through CCTV footage, forensic examinations and intelligence analysis.
The investigation led detectives to Daniel Mwangi Njoroge and Kelvin Ngugi Kinuthia. The DCI alleges that Njoroge coordinated the operation and hired two Toyota Prado vehicles that were later traced to the crime scene through tracking data. Kinuthia is accused of ferrying the suspected shooter on a motorcycle that has since been seized by investigators.
The investigation also uncovered the alleged involvement of serving police officers. Inspector Kenneth Kipkemboi Sang, who is currently being sought by detectives, is accused of linking the financiers to the operational team and providing the murder weapon. Police Constable Elijah Kibelion Kimoi has been arrested and is alleged to have carried out the shooting, while Police Constable Bett Kiplangat Collins remains on the run after investigators allegedly placed him at the scene using forensic evidence.
Amin described the involvement of police officers as a serious betrayal of public trust and vowed that all those involved would be brought before the courts.
Investigators said they later recovered a Mini Jericho pistol from the armoury at Nderi Police Post. According to ballistic examinations, the firearm matched the cartridges recovered at the scene and the bullet removed from Dr. Mutiso’s body during the post-mortem.
On the possible motive, the DCI said the evidence gathered so far points to a long-running land dispute involving property in Mlolongo. Detectives allege that Dr. Mutiso’s decision to place a caveat on the disputed land threatened the interests of individuals contesting ownership.
The DCI identified Rose Mbithe Mulwa, the former wife of Dr. Mutiso’s husband Prof. David Musyimi Ndetei, together with her son Christopher Mulwa, as the alleged organisers and financiers of the murder plot. Both remain in custody under court orders as investigations continue.
Detectives also revealed that Dr. Mutiso had previously reported an incident on July 7 in which two men on a motorcycle allegedly pointed a gun at her along Ngong Road near Junction Mall. Although she reported the matter, investigators said no further statement was recorded.
Amin said detectives are continuing with investigations, including examining possible links between some of the suspects and the September 2025 drive-by shooting of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu.
The DCI maintained that investigations remain active and stressed that no individual is above the law regardless of their position or influence. Amin appealed to members of the public with relevant information to assist investigators through official DCI channels as detectives continue pursuing all remaining suspects and additional leads.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua had not publicly responded to the allegations by the time of the DCI briefing.
