The family of former Matungu Member of Parliament David Were is demanding thorough investigations into the death of their relative, Hannington Were, who was fatally attacked in Kisumu County on Sunday morning.
A postmortem carried out on Tuesday at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital showed that the 39-year-old died from excessive bleeding caused by multiple stab wounds.
According to the medical findings, Hannington suffered three stab injuries on his back, with the wounds penetrating vital organs, including the lungs. Pathologists said the injuries led to severe internal bleeding that caused his death.
The family has questioned reports suggesting that the incident was a simple robbery. They believe there could have been another motive behind the attack and are now calling on detectives to carry out detailed investigations to establish what exactly happened.
Speaking outside Kwee Funeral Home at the referral hospital on Tuesday afternoon, former MP David Were said the family was not fully convinced by the initial reports surrounding the incident. He urged investigators to look deeper into the matter and ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice.
Preliminary reports indicate that Hannington had left his residence shortly after midnight in the company of a friend when they were allegedly confronted by two armed men riding on a motorcycle.
During the encounter, the attackers reportedly ambushed the pair and stabbed Hannington before fleeing from the scene.
He was rushed to hospital in critical condition and admitted for treatment. However, he later died from the injuries while receiving medical care.
The incident has caused concern among relatives, friends, and residents in the area, with many calling for swift action from security agencies. Family members say they want investigators to determine whether the killing was linked to a robbery or if Hannington may have been specifically targeted.
Police have not yet released a detailed statement on the progress of investigations, and no arrests have been confirmed so far in connection with the killing.
