Security officers in Kenya have stopped what could have been a serious attack after intercepting a vehicle carrying dangerous materials across the border.

The operation took place after officers received intelligence that suspicious goods were being moved from Tanzania into Kenya.

According to a statement released on Friday, February 20, by the Kenya Police Service, officers on duty at the Isebania border stopped a white Toyota Probox for inspection. The driver initially complied and pulled over, but suddenly sped off, raising alarm among the officers.

A search of the abandoned vehicle revealed a large and dangerous consignment.

Police recovered 12 drums of sodium cyanide, each weighing 50 kilograms, as well as two cartons containing V6 Explogel explosives.

Sodium cyanide is a highly poisonous chemical that can cause death if misused, making the discovery especially worrying.

Investigators later revealed that the suspect had entered Kenya through a porous route in the Nyang’iti area, avoiding official border checks. A multi-agency security team has since been deployed to track down the driver, who remains at large and is believed to be the main suspect behind the illegal shipment.

The police assured the public that they remain alert and committed to protecting the country. They emphasized that border surveillance has been strengthened to prevent illegal and harmful goods from entering Kenya and putting lives at risk.

This incident comes only days after another major security success in Nairobi. In that case, police officers working together with the National Intelligence Service stopped a planned terror attack within the city.

The suspects were tracked to an informal settlement, where officers recovered several firearms and rounds of ammunition.

Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli said the suspects had entered Kenya through the porous Kenya-Somalia border. He added that they had stayed at the Daadab Refugee camp, where they planned the attack before moving to Nairobi.
