Paul Agali Otula, a revered figure in Kenya’s educational and sports landscapes, has passed away at the age of 65. The former Maseno School principal and long-serving Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) president died on Thursday at his Nairobi home after suffering a cardiac arrest, his family confirmed.

Otula’s career was marked by a profound commitment to nurturing young talent and elevating standards in both academics and athletics. As principal of Maseno School from 2001, he transformed the institution into a powerhouse of excellence, introducing Aviation Technology and leading the school’s teams to national and continental victories in basketball, rugby, and hockey.
His leadership saw Maseno produce numerous basketball talents who secured scholarships abroad, notably at Trevecca Nazarene University in the U.S.In 2008, Otula was elected chairman of the Kenya Basketball Federation, a position he held with distinction.
Under his stewardship, Kenyan basketball witnessed significant growth, including the national team’s silver medal at the 2019 AfroCan tournament. He was instrumental in forging a historic partnership between Kenya and the NBA in 2023, aimed at developing basketball infrastructure and talent across the country.
Otula’s contributions were recognized at the highest levels; he received the Head of State Commendation in 2005 and the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya in 2015 . He also authored the’Mastery of Modern School Administration,’ reflecting his dedication to educational leadership.
Despite facing challenges, including his interdiction in 2017 amid allegations at Maseno School, Otula’s legacy as a transformative leader remains intact.
His passing is a significant loss to the nation, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and mentorship that will inspire future generations. He is survived by his family, who have requested privacy during this time of mourning.
